What is Rush?
Rush is a period of time at the beginning of every semester where organizations (fraternities and sororities) try to recruit members. If you choose to participate, you become a rushee. There are no commitments or promises required during rush. Rush is a time when we hold events for you to come out and get to know the sisters of Kappa Phi Lambda. During the week, you will get to know who we are, what we do, what we stand for, etc. This week is for you to decide if Kappa Phi Lambda is for you, and for us to decide if you are for Kappa Phi Lambda. Rush is a great time to meet new people and have some fun. Join us this semester; it is completely free!

Are there any requirements to join? Do you have to be Asian?
We have two (2) requirements; you must have a GPA of at least 2.5 and must be currently enrolled as a UMBC student.

Furthermore, although we are an Asian interest organization, anyone who is interested in learning more about us is welcome to do so during the rush and of course, anytime during the school year!

What is a bid? How do I get one?
A “bid” is a term commonly used to define a formal invitation to take part in the intake process.  As rush is time for you to learn more about our interests, equally, it is a time for us to get to know a little more about you.  We are an organization but more importantly, we are a sisterhood and involvement does not end after you graduate from school; we want to be sure we are the right Greek organization for you.

What is intaking (pledging)? Do you haze?
The intake process is a time for you to learn about the sorority in depth and for you to better know the sisters and vice versa.  From team bonding, team building, and education the experiences range for some.

Under the Maryland Anti-Hazing Law 268H, hazing is deemed as “any act or causing any situation which recklessly or intentionally subjects a student to the risk of serious bodily injury for the purpose of initiation into a student organization of a school, college, or university”.  Simply put, it is illegal to haze and Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. recognizes and respects the mental and physical well-being of our organization potentials and we would never put you in a compromising situation.

How do I know if a sorority is right for me?
As a young woman, there are many reasons to join a sorority.  From giving back to your fellow women to fostering lifelong friendships, the incentives all vary.  However, the rush period is a time for those interested to see if Kappa Phi Lambda is right for you.  As an Asian interest cultural sorority our pillars are Sisterhood, Service, and Cultural Diversity; find out what that means by coming to some events.

There is a Greek organization for everyone; find if Kappa Phi Lambda is the right fit for you.
